Thursday 13th August 2020

Late news, 12/8, Delabole: Still a party of at least 20 screeing Swifts here. Very late as usually gone by mid July. Certainly local breeders as we have 2 or 3 colonies, and flying low. Presumably young birds. No doubt the heatwave responsible: no cool nights until the rain arrived overnight today (13/08). Unclear whether they have been returning to nests overnight or remaining on the wing. (N Page)

Feock: A pair of Swifts still with young in the nest. They occupy a space under the barge boards of a cottage, which is adjacent to the owners’ bedroom and the young can be clearly heard. Droppings are still appearing beneath the nest and I have seen a swift entering the nest site during the day as well as at 8.45 at night, presumably to roost.  Two swifts can be seen feeding over the cottages. They are silent apart from the occasional single call as one leaves the nest. The other local breeding swifts and the bigger screaming party have not been seen for 2 weeks. (K Dalziel)
