Storm Petrel ringing demonstrations
Over the August new moon period, West Cornwall Ringing Group are offering the opportunity for people to come and see some Storm Petrel ringing at either Porthgwarra or Southerly Point, Lizard. Sessions are very weather-dependent so will be announced at short notice on the website and social media, but will be within a couple of days of 8th August (new moon). ***UPDATE*** Sessions will now go ahead at both sites on Tuesday 10th.
Sessions will start at 11pm at both sites and people can drop in for as long as they like. We obviously can’t guarantee when (or if) we will catch birds, but later in the night is often better. We normally finish at 1am at Lizard and 2am at Porthgwarra, but be aware that if conditions change we may have to cut short or cancel the session.
People will need to bring a torch of some sort, particularly at Porthgwarra as we’ll walk out along the moor there. Also bring a chair if you don’t want to stand or sit on the ground for any length of time. It can also get surprisingly cold, so make sure you have a few extra layers. We’ll allow people to take photographs, but only when the team say so and please make sure you don’t use any flash, just our own torchlight.
At Porthgwarra, please park in the main car park at the bottom of the valley and walk up the road and through the gate to the NCI building at the top of the cliff. One of the ringing team will be on hand to pick people up from there and walk them out across the moor.
At Lizard, park at any of the car parks at Southerly Point and walk down to the National Trust Watchpoint where we’ll be based for the night. There’s no cost and no need to book, but we do ask that people only attend one or the other of the sessions. If you have any queries then please get in touch with Mark Grantham ([email protected]).
