This week it was Adrian Langdon’s turn to ponder over the photos submitted to our sightings team. Here’s his review and chosen image.

“Variable weather conditions and frequent storms have made for an interesting time with cameras. It seems that Davidstow has been particularly well photographed recently, a combination of lots of good birds and the luxury of being able to stay in your car in the dry!

I really liked Adrian Lea’s Curlew Sandpiper images both taken at Davidstow. I note that the image with 3 birds was featured in the Birdguides weekly review so well done for that exposure!

I’m guessing the winds forced Rupert Kirkwood, the lone kayaker, farther up the Fowey estuary where he captured a nice flight shot of an Osprey. Also some good Greenshanks.

Only a single image on Wednesday which enabled Rebecca Bowyer to take the limelight with a really super behavioural image of a Turnstone with a Limpet.

Marlene Rouncefield photographed a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Goldfinch either side of a bird feeder, not an easy thing to do but she achieved good depth of field so that both birds were sharply portrayed.

Pic of the day was a Meadow Pipit by Vic Booth, the differential focusing showing the bird off really well.

On Friday both David Collins and Steven Wood photographed a Dotterel at Predannack Head near Mullion, fine photos but I did particularly like the one by Steven with a grub in its bill.

It was back to Davidstow on Saturday where Gavin Williams’ shot of 2 Ruff caught my eye but sorry Gavin the Little Stint by Sophie Godwin trumped it!

On Sunday the cameras were again out in force with a super Wryneck by Steven Wood at Kynance also a Green Woodpecker at the same site. A Spotted Flycatcher and Chiffchaff both excelled for Steve Cox.

A fine individual portrait of a Turnstone by Martin Webb and a Cormorant juggling an eel by Gerry Gillard both stood out amongst the day’s images.

When I judge photo competitions and exhibitions one of the strong indicators, I use to select a winner is “am I envious, do I wish I’d taken that photograph?”.

Well I had that feeling on several of the pics this week but for me the stand-out image was the Little Stint by Sophie Godwin, taken at Davidstow.

A subtle catchlight in its eye, water droplets on its back and all sparkling in the grass with the perfect depth of field to blur the background nicely.
