We have Adrian Lea to thank for this week’s commentary.

Nick Truby established a high standard at the very beginning of this week with some excellent Firecrest and Chough photographs taken at Kenidjack.

The momentum continued on Tuesday with the confiding and photogenic Lesser Yellowlegs at Truro attracting the attention of Tony Wilson and the Steppe Grey Shrike at Mullion showing well for David Collins. Dean Pollard also provided some beautifully detailed photographs of a Kestrel in flight hunting dragonflies at Walmsley.

The Steppe Grey Shrike continued to show well on Wednesday with Jonathan Warner, Joe Jones and Jon Irvine providing some great photographs while John Chapple kindly provided some excellent video footage.

Jonathan Warner and Nigel Rogers submitted some inspiring photographs from their sea-watching at St Ives Island on Thursday, and I particularly liked the clifftop Kestrel image taken by Jonathan.

Friday proved to be a Black (Friday) Redstart day for G Williams and Nick Truby, both providing excellent photographs of this eagerly awaited winter visitor.

On Saturday the Ring-necked Duck at Helston Boating Lake was well-photographed by Steve Ford; Caroline Taylor submitted a great shot of the Spotted Redshank at Devoran while Alistair Swanson provided some lovely photographs of the Slavonian Grebe at Drift Reservoir.

The week ended as strongly as it began with excellent photo of the week contenders being the Ring-necked Duck by Kathy White, the Lesser Yellowlegs by Caroline Taylor, the Slavonian Grebe by Mark James and the Marsh Harrier by Dean Pollard.

While some great photographs have undoubtedly been submitted this week, and I’ve particularly enjoyed the Steppe Grey Shrike and Lesser Yellowlegs images, my favourite image is the Slavonian Grebe by Alistair Swanson, the feather and water detail is pin-sharp and the red eye is bewitching. A great photograph.
