“Another enjoyable week of photography from members, with a good mix of coastal species, waterbirds and garden visitors, as well as some early signs of spring migration beginning to appear around the county.

The week began on Monday with two particularly pleasing images from Mark James taken at Porth Reservoir. One showed a Great crested Grebe resting on the water, while the other was a good close-up of a Goldcrest feeding among the branches. Both images showed excellent detail and made a strong start to the week.

Tuesday followed with two members producing photographs from Helston Boating Lake. Steve Bury captured a Kumlien’s Gull, while Martin Webb submitted a good quality image of a Tufted Duck, clearly showing the distinctive tuft of the drake bird to good effect.

Wednesday brought some of the first photographs this season of Northern Wheatears as they arrived back into Cornwall on spring migration. Rebecca Bowyer produced a couple of nice images from Pendennis Point at Falmouth, alongside a good shot of Purple Sandpipers from the same location. Jasmina Goodair contributed a cracking photograph of a Yellowhammer taken in a private garden at Mount near Cardinham on the edge of Bodmin Moor, which was chosen as Photo of the Day. She also produced a good image of a Nuthatch taken at Golitha Falls, again on Bodmin Moor.

There were also several good small passerine photographs from Martin Webb, all taken at St Gothian’s at Hayle. Martin also submitted images of Greater Scaup taken at Longrock Pool at Marazion, along with a photograph of a Great White Egret at Marazion Marsh. Robin Chiffers added a particularly strong action shot of a female Great-spotted Woodpecker in flight, taken at the Stithians feeder hide.

Attention later in the week turned to Treraven Marsh on the Camel estuary near Wadebridge, where several members were drawn to photograph the long-staying Russian White-fronted Goose and a newly arrived Bar-headed Goose. Images from these birds appeared on the website from Vic Booth, Steve Cox and Gavin Williams. On Friday, Photo of the Day went to Jasmina Goodair for an attractive portrait of a Redpoll taken in a private garden at Mount near Cardinham – an unusual and always welcome bird in Cornwall.

Saturday produced another set of strong photographs from Martin Webb, including a cracking image of a Greenshank taken at Black Bridge Hayle, and a Little Egret photographed at Marazion Marsh. C.Taylor also submitted an image of a pair of Fulmars on the cliffs at Polly Joke near Newquay. Martin Webb followed up later with further photographs taken at Newlyn Harbour, including various gulls along with good images of both Shag and Cormorant.

Selecting a winner from a week’s array of photos is never easy and this week was no different from past overviews. However, three photos stood out for their quality and individuality: the Greenshank from Martin Webb, and the Yellowhammer and Redpoll both by Jasmina Goodair.

I really don’t remember us selecting a redpoll for “Photo of the Week” before as whilst it’s not a rarity, it doesn’t occur far away from its Cornish breeding stronghold of Bodmin Moor, hence Jasmina’s good fortune at finding it feeding in a private garden on the edge of the moor.
