Photo of the Week 31st March – 6th April 2025

This week it was Adrian Langdon’s turn to have a look and write a review of the photos. Here’s his take on the submissions.

‘With an amazing spell of fine weather the photos have poured into the Sighting pages and that has made it rather difficult to select this week’s winner.
Sunday started with a couple of Common Starlings with nest material at Carnkie by Adrian Lea, getting to be an unusual sight these days.
Hoopoes dominated the pages early in the week and there were some great action shots of them with grubs in mid-air between open beaks. A Cetti’s warbler by Steve Cox broke with tradition and showed they can be seen rather than heard on occasions!
Later in the week the finding of an Alpine Accentor at Aire point triggered an influx of photos of this cracking little bird against a background of Cornish granite. There were some fine photos from Tony Mills, Nigel Rogers, Adrian Lea, Adrian Davey, Gill Fisher, Nick Whatmough et al.
Gill Fisher also excelled with a stunning Red Kite photo which was the front runner for a while alongside the Loe Bar Kentish Plover by Adrian Lea.
Wheatears by Nigel Bastin & Jonathon Warner were also high up my list.
John St.Ledger had a really nice shot of a Sanderling at Loe Bar.
On the Saturday another Red Kite looked good, this time by Dougy Wright at Porthgwarra.
Whilst I’ve enjoyed looking at the photos of rarities and have even taken a few myself, the top image in my mind has been the Great White Egret swallowing a fish by Fary Afshar.
All action and a perfect exposure which isn’t always easy when photographing egrets.
Congratulations Fary.’

Thanks for the write up Adrian and to all the photographers who take the trouble to send in photos.
