“What a huge variety of birds passing through Cornwall just as I choose to be away on the other side of the world!

The surprise of the week I think goes with the huge influx of Glossy Ibis with many excellent images by many including individual portraits by Adrian Lea, Neil Best, Martin Webb and Ian Hampton and a great shot of a large group in flight by Adrian Langdon. There was a massive influx of various North American sandpipers, particularly in the east of the County including really good images by Jim Eames of the Baird’s Sandpiper, by Nick Watmough and Gill Fisher of Buff-breasted Sandpiper and by Carl Stephenson and Adrian Davey of Pectoral Sandpiper. There was also some great shots by Bob Bosisto and Vic Booth of Curlew Sandpiper. Lovely to see the Wryneck by Graham May, the Wheatear by Vic Booth and Ruff by Phil and Sue Naylor.

Right from the beginning of the week I was drawn to the Red Knot by Martin Webb however in the end I picked the Water Rail by Carl Stephenson. The image was sharp and had great movement, composition and light to depict the secretiveness of this bird and how it creeps silently through the reeds.
