After two rounds of votoing and two semi-finals, the results are in and we’re pleased to announce that our Photo of the Year for 2023 is Jan Lewis’ flight shot of a Purple Heron at Ruan Lanhorne in April.
“My wife and I had never seen a Purple Heron and so when one was reported close by at Ruan Lanihorne we had to go. It was early April and there was also a Black-winged Stilt a short walk away. We planned to spend the day there when the sun was out on the 10th. I couldn’t resist a quick look and went late afternoon the day before to understand the site and where the bird was. Only a view of its head skulking in a ditch on that visit. So Julia and I set off the next day on the short but very windy drive with high hopes. After an hour or so we spotted it working its way through the reeds. Great views when it flew a short distance but no photographs in flight as it was too quick. However as It had chosen a small area of reeds to feed in, another flight seemed likely. I was ready for takeoff but with the Canon R7 being new to me I didn’t get the auto-focus locked on in flight. I did however take enough pictures of the flight that at least this one was just about in focus. I was fortunate with the background colours complementing the subject.”
So well done to Jan for this great, albeit lucky, capture!
