Seabirding on the Other Side of the Pond: A History and Possibilities from the Western North Atlantic

Kate Sutherland has been taking people offshore from Hatteras, North Carolina in the USA for over 23 years. She is a marine biologist and captain who prefers life offshore.
We will hear about the history of pelagic birding in the continental United States then focus specifically on trips from the other side of the pond; the US East Coast. We will delve into the history of ‘seabirding’ and learn about trips they run currently on their boat, the Stormy Petrel II. We will discuss identification criteria for Bermuda, Black-capped, Trindade, Fea’s complex, and Zino’s Petrels, Red-billed and White-tailed Tropicbirds, Scopoli’s and Audubon’s Shearwaters, Masked Booby and South Polar Skua, wrapping up with a more detailed look at what we have learned about some of the gadfly petrel species over the past 10 to 15 years.
