We are saddened to learn the news of the passing of Terry Cooper and our thoughts go out to his family and friends. Terry gave a great amount of time to bird monitoring and conservation in Cornwall and was an avid citizen scientist. He was a prominent member of the West Cornwall Ringing Group and played a big part in their Barn Owl monitoring project, building countless nest boxes and ringing Barn Owl chicks, his love of owls and enthusiasm no doubt helped convince many farmers and landowners to protect their roosts and foraging habitats. Terry was also fascinated by gulls and would often be part of trips to Looe Island and Mullion Island to monitor the Great Black-backed Gull colonies. He loved to read colour rings in order to learn of the fascinating life histories of these well travelled birds. Later in life Terry achieved a ringing permit of his own, allowing him to colour ring gulls in the St Austell area and further contributing to the British Trust for Ornithology ringing scheme.
