Season update, St Ives, Buttermilk Hill/Rosewall Hill: A big “Thank you” to everone who responded last year to the National Trust to protect the site from the summer grazing by horses where we had lost 85.4% of all the breeding birds. This year with a new Management Plan with the horses shut out from the hill from 1st March to 1st September we have had all  Meadow Pipits and Linnets rearing a second brood, two pairs of Stonechats bred for the first time in 6 years rearing two broods each, 8 to 10 pairs of Whitethroats some of which were double brooded for the first time in 6 years, The Nightjars bred once again (previously the young were trampled to death by horses), and this year we have 3 young Cuckoos (their first success for 6 years). Sadly, Dartford Warblers did not return but we are hopeful for next year. This success is due to the many people that wrote letters to save the wildlife on this beautiful section of moorland. Vivian Stratton/John Thomas and Emmanuelle (National Trust).
