Falmouth, Castle Beach: 1 Black Redstart and 3 Black-throated Diver offshore. Pendennis Point seawatch 9:15 -11:00: Steady passage of Gannets and Kittiwakes, a few Fulmars and other gulls. 3+ Black-throated Diver, 1 Grebe sp (probably Red-necked) and 3 Great Northern Diver on the sea. Auks, Razorbill and Guillemot in good numbers. 1 Peregrine, 2 Grey Plover and 1 Turnstone. 1 Black Redstart (f) on rooftop (Pendennis Rise). Penryn River/Gorrangorras: 85 Curlew, c20 Mute Swan, 20+ Redshank, 4 Little Egret, 3 Little Grebe, 2+ Greenshank and 2 Oystercatcher. Plus 1 Common Sandpiper near the Waterside Dentalcare carpark. St Ives: Summary of sightings from 08:00 – 08:30: 3 Balearic Shearwater (2 ints and 1 pale)
1 Manx Shearwater, 6 Great Northern Diver, 6 Purple Sandpiper, 2 Mediterranean Gull, 1 Black Redstart (f), plus 4 Bottlenose Dolphin and 2 Grey Seal. A quieter day bird-wise, with much larger swell waves and stronger winds (gale force gusts at time), but dry. Similar numbers and range of species in the bay and sheltering in lee of headland to yesterday – Guillemot (~100), Razorbill (10), Gannet (~30), Kittiwake (20), and Shag (~30). A couple of feeding events were recorded 150m from watchpoint; these comprised 5 Greater black-backed gull, 3 Gannet, 2 Guillemot and another comprised 10 Gannet, 8 Shag, 6 Guillemot and 4 Greater black-backed gull. Balearic and Manx shearwaters were again observed dip diving in main channel close to watchpoint, usually associating with a couple of diving Gannets. A noticeable difference was the evening roost in Portminster Bay – approx 2000 Gulls – 95% Herring Gull, 5% Greater Black backed Gulls. 4 Bottlenose dolphin arrived 14:30 and were tracked from western centre of the bay northwestwards toward the main channel. 3 then moved north to the watchpoint and then they retraced their tracks, venturing closer inshore east of the Hayle mouth. All 4 were then tracked moving eastwards towards Gwithian until poor light stopped play and the survey at 17:00. (A Colenutt & R Christopher)
